Tis’ the season here on the Vineyard where we trade jingle bells for wedding bells, winter white for wedding white and instead of decking the halls with holly, we’re likely to deck them with fresh cut flowers. Welcome to one of the top destinations (in the WORLD!) to get hitched. But before you go all vanilla on your wedding guests, we’re here to throw some curveballs your way (and support some local businesses while you’re at it!). Got your pencil and paper ready? Let’s plan your Martha’s Vineyard wedding…
The Allen Farm, Chilmark. This picturesque farm has it all: rolling green hills, open sky, views of Chilmark Pond, the Atlantic Ocean and Lucy Vincent Beach…oh and of course sheep!
Vanderhoop Homestead grounds, Aquinnah. Situated on a hill overlooking the ocean and Aquinnah’s breathtaking clay cliffs, the Vanderhoop Homestead is full of history. It currently houses the Aquinnah Cultural Center, which is chock full of the island’s tribal history but they allow for private events on the grounds.
The Tabernacle at Trinity Park (Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association), Oak Bluffs. Located smack dab in the center of the famous Gingerbread Cottages, the Tabernacle is a fun, colorful and unique venue to say I-Do!
Stoney Hill Road House, Tisbury. This 6500 sq. foot estate home is located on Malabar Farm and boasts Land Bank walking trails and paved bike paths accessible directly from the property.
Martha’s Vineyard Steamship Authority, Woods Hole-MV. If you’re nice to the captain and crew, they’ll let you get hitched on the upper deck. Just don’t get left behind on the mainland or you’ll miss the ceremony and most of the reception!
Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society, West Tisbury. Home to the island’s annual Ag Fair, this venue gives guests a farm feeling with a rustic barn as the centerpiece.
Ocean Park Gazebo, Oak Bluffs. Called the “Jewel of Oak Bluffs”, Ocean Park has views of the ocean and the boats scooting in and out of the harbor.
The Captain R. Flanders House, Chilmark. This renovated farmhouse set amongst the rolling hills of Chilmark encompasses all of what “up-island” is. The building is surrounded by woodlands and overlooks Bliss Pond.
Katama Airfield, Edgartown. Wanna get hitched on a bi-plane? Katama Airfield is adjacent South Beach and combines a beachy feel with beautiful pastureland.
Aquinnah, Edgartown or East Chop Lighthouses.
Vineyard Haven Yacht Club, Vineyard Haven. Located on the water facing Vineyard Haven harbor, the Yacht Club has a long dock which lends itself well to photos of the bride, groom and wedding party.
State Beach’s Jaws Bridge, Oak Bluffs-Edgartown. For all of our Jaws-loving friends why not go back to where it all began?
So now that we’ve covered venue, let us recommend some of our friends (who just happen to be the best-of-the-best in their biz):
Gift Bags: Custom products for gift bags such as slap coozies, jewelry and tote bags at Slip77 (shameless plug, had to do it)
Florist: Emily Coulter at Morrice Florist
Enjoy planning your island wedding and we’ll be expecting an invite!
